SINCE 1989

We are building on one of the world’s oldest sustainability advisory organisations, Det Naturliga Steget. Under a new name and leadership, Sustain In Time is the Swedish office of The Natural Step. We have guided hundreds of global organisations and communities on their transformative journey. We help companies prosper through sustainability.

The Natural Step has received a number of awards over the years including: Mikhail Gorbachev’s Green Cross Millennium Award in 1999 and The Blue Planet Award (considered the “Nobel Prize of the Environment”) in 2000.  In 2006, The Natural Step’s “Sustainability 101” eLearning course was awarded the Brandon Hall Silver Medal for Excellence in Learning.

What is Sustain in Time?
Sustain In Time is a B Corp and part of the International NGO, The Natural Step. We provide international and local advisory services for corporations, governments and civil society. Our strategy is to digitize sustainability to accelerate the implementation of sustainable business principles to help achieve a sustainable society in time.

What happened to Det Naturliga Steget?
In February 2017 Det Naturliga Steget AB, the company operating the activities of Det Naturliga Steget was closed due to financial difficulties. Sustain In Time has taken over the operations and created a new opportunity for the legacy of Det Naturliga Steget to continue.

Is The Natural Step still using a science-based methodology?
Yes. This is written into the constitution of The Natural Step International. The underlying premise for the work of The Natural Step and its members is a scientific, systemic and strategic approach.

Who owns The Natural Step Framework / Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development?
It is based on peer-reviewed research and is “open source”, not owned or trademarked i.e. it is free for everyone to use. We encourage all those using the framework to stay up to date with the scientific research by following the work of the Alliance for Strategic Sustainable Development.

Is The Natural Step still a non-profit organisation?
Yes. Members are either non-profit organisations or Benefit Corporations (B Corp). The members implement the mission by working with individuals and organisations to take concrete action towards, and beyond, ecological, social, and economic sustainability.

Sustain In Time is a B Corp, what is that?
B Corps are a new type of company that use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. B Corps are independently certified to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

Why was Sustain In Time started?
Martin Malmros started Sustain In Time to rapidly increase organisations’ ability to become more sustainable. By using the competence and experience from The Natural Step and converting it into digital tools and engaging and empowering employees we can increase individuals’ contributions towards ecological, social and economic sustainability.

What was Karl-Henrik Robèrts (the founder) role in Det Naturliga Steget AB
The founder has had no formal role in the organisation since several years. (Not owner, part of the board or employed). However he had an informal role as a scientific advisor and we collaborated on several occassions.

What does Sustain In Time think of the criticism from the founder of The Natural Step Karl-Henrik Robèrt?
Sustain In Time disagrees with Dr Karl Henrik. We believe the international NGO, The Natural Step should focus on implementing the science-based research (such as FSSD) and that the conducting of further research should be done by independent researchers.
